Nebraska Medical Nutrition Therapist License Types
Licensed Medical Nutrition Therapist (LMNT)
In Nebraska, dietitians are licensed as LMNTs. An LMNT license is required specifically to provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT), which involves treating diseases or medical conditions.
How to Get Licensed in Nebraska
Complete Education & Supervised Practice
Earn a master's degree or higher from an ACEND-accredited program. Complete a minimum of 900 hours of board-approved supervised practice through an accredited dietitian internship.
Pass the CDR Examination
Successfully pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) Registration Examination for Dietitians. Verification of current RD or RDN status satisfies this and the education requirements.
Submit the Application to DHHS
Complete the application form for Medical Nutrition Therapy Licensure and submit it with the $114 fee, proof of age (minimum 19), and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence.
Provide Verification & Fingerprints
Send a copy of your active CDR card or have primary source verification sent. Starting January 1, 2026, all DHHS applicants must undergo a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
Application Checklist
-
CDR Registration Verification Verification of active registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
-
Proof of Age & Legal Presence A copy of a birth certificate, driver's license, passport, or similar documentation.
-
Fingerprint Background check Required for all new applications starting in 2026.
Provisional Practice & Reciprocity
Nebraska does not specify a provisional LMNT license option. An applicant must meet all qualifications including examination prior to licensure.
Licensure by reciprocity is available for an applicant currently licensed in another state. The requirements of that state must be substantially equivalent to Nebraska's. Verification of all held licenses and active CDR registration is required, along with the $114 application fee.
If your assignment start date is within 5 weeks, apply immediately and call the board at (402) 471-2115 to confirm current processing times.
Note: Nebraska does not offer a standard provisional license, so your license must be issued before your first day.
Renewal Requirements
Nebraska medical nutrition therapist licenses renew every 2 years (by sept 1 of odd years) + 30 ce hours. Renewal fee is $114.
