How to Get Licensed in Maine
Complete Education & Supervised Practice
Earn a master's degree or higher from an ACEND-accredited program. Complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of board-approved supervised practice through an accredited dietitian internship.
Pass the CDR Examination
Successfully pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) Registration Examination for Dietitians. Verification of current RD status satisfies this.
Submit the Application via Maine OPOR
Create an account on the Maine OPOR online portal, complete the initial application, and pay the required fees ($150 license + $21 background check).
Provide Verification Documents
Submit a copy of your active CDR card or ensure verification is sent directly. A criminal history records check is conducted automatically with the submission of your application and fee.
Application Checklist
-
CDR Registration Card Proof of active registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
-
Criminal History Records Check Processed internally by the Board upon receipt of the $21 fee with an application.
-
Official College Transcripts May be required if not submitting primary source verification via the CDR.
Provisional Practice & Reciprocity
Maine offers a temporary dietitian license for applicants who have met the educational and experience requirements but have not yet passed the examination. Temporary licensees must practice under the supervision of a Maine Licensed Dietitian.
Maine provides licensure by endorsement for applicants holding a substantially equivalent license in another state or holding active registration as a Registered Dietitian with the CDR. A verification of licensure from the other state(s) must be provided.
If your assignment start date is within 5 weeks, apply immediately and call the board at (207) 624-8626 to confirm current processing times.
